Software Development still is not engineering discipline.
Any other industry has more established standards and rules than Software Development.

The biggest gap today is: there is no Design phase anymore. Very often you can see requirements - saying what to do, but there is no Design saying how to do. By missing design most of software producta have poor implementation.

It is easy to convince a potential customer how easy it would be to implement his requirements, but it’s very hard to explain later – why it works not as expected.

A good system design could save a lot of money after coding.
